Mourinho's first season at Old Trafford saw Manchester United finish sixth in the Premier League, and they won the Europa League and EFL Cup. With Romelu Lukaku, Nemanja Matic and Victor Lindelof now at United, the Red Devil’s boss Mourinho is looking forward to the season ahead. "The only thing I have to do is work every day like I always do, the only demand on me is the one I put on myself," said Mourinho. "I don't put any extra pressure on myself because I always give everything, then normally the results are a good consequence of that work. My dedication to my job is always at the maximum, even more now than when I started, and I believe at the end of the season we will see the results. With these players I am looking forward to the season with optimism, with enthusiasm, I can't wait for the Champions League to start and the chance to play the top clubs. I am on fire."
United spent £75million to lure Lukaku from Everton, while Lindelof arrived in a deal worth around £30m. However, the signing of former Chelsea midfielder Matic is a feather in Mourinho’s cap. Chelsea are arch-rivals for the league title and Champions League trophy in the season ahead. "I could see when I first came to United that we needed a Matic-type player," said Mourinho. "But there are not many around and I do not like to go after players where it is an impossible mission. Then I heard that he wanted to join United and could make it happen. I am very happy to have him because he is one of those players with no question marks. He doesn't need time to adapt. He’s not a young guy coming from another country. He’s just turned 29 and he has five years' Premier League experience. He gives me something I really like which is consistency. He is a fantastic signing for us because I can trust him to perform at a high level."
Romelu Lukaku has begun to pay off his £75million transfer fee by scoring two crucial goals as Manchester United beat West Ham 4-0 in their Premier League season opener at Old Trafford. The £75 million summer signing scored in each half as Manchester United justified their fans preseason optimism with an inspired and confident display in their first match of the 2017-18 Premier League season. Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho and his Red Devils’ side are on fire in their bid to win the 2017-18 Premier League Championship. There is an existing pattern of Mourinho winning the league title in his second season at previous clubs. Mourinho has an expectation to repeat his history of second season victory in this, his second season at Man United.
Manchester United’s first game of the new season went well with fans feeling a rich season of success lies ahead. There was little room for improvement other than the side scoring another goal. New signing and former Everton star Romelu Lukaku demonstrated why he became the club’s most expensive summer hire. Lukaku scored two goals that laid the foundations for the strongest league win of the Mourinho era at Manchester United to date. Lukaku, the £75m summer signing, showed a flicker of stage fright with his left-foot finish and close-range header with which he introduced himself to the Old Trafford fans. Lukaku ended the beautiful afternoon waving appreciatively to the Stretford End. Lukaku almost scored a third, but for a brilliant saving tackle on Lukaku by Pablo Zabaleta, one of three West Ham debutants, to deny him a hat-trick just after the hour. Lukaku eased into life at Manchester’s Old Trafford as he made the headlines with the helf of Marcus Rashford and Paul Pogba. After the match that showed off significant Manchester United superiority, Mourinho no doubt is filled with optimism that his men are capable of a top season after last season’s sixth-placed finish. Mourinho pointed out afterward that we should anticipate the team getting better. “I’m not going to say the performance was perfect because it wasn’t perfect. There is still room for improvement.”
Henrikh Mkhitaryan was a key player as was former Chelsea star Nemanja Matic who fit in seamlessly with his new side. Substitute Anthony Martial slotted in the third goal, quickly followed by a brilliant move by Paul Pogba who knocked in another in from 20 yards. Sadly West Ham have now lost 11 opening-day fixtures in the Premier League, more than any other club. The crowd serenaded Jose Mourinho and former Manchester City goalie Joe Hart who is now West Ham’s new goalkeeper. Hart not long ago was winning championships with Manchester City. Victor Lindelof, the £31m signing for Manchester United from Benfica was not in the lineup because of his unimpressive form in pre-season. Mourinho named Phil Jones instead of Lindelof along with Eric Bailly to stop Javier Hernández in his return to Old Trafford. Hernández scored 37 goals in 103 EPL games during his time with Manchester United. In his term with the Red Devils, Chicharito would have enjoyed the chances that Lukaku’s team-mates served up for the Belgian. Mkhitaryan’s expertly delivered a free-kick for the second goal. Rashford’s beautiful pass to Lukaku for the first goal was amazing. Rashford was also involved in the second goal, after being decked by Zabaleta for the free-kick before Martial took over for the last 10 minutes. At the pace United were playing, they could have racked up several more goals against the Hammers who were significantly outplayed. At the end of the match. sub Anthony Martial along with Paul Pogba scored in the closing minutes, making the final score 4-0.
United took control early in the match and never relinquished their powerful grip, looking formidable with new arrivals Lukaku and Nemanja Matic playing well together. West Ham's former Manchester United striker, popular Javier “Little Pea” Hernandez was given a warm reception before kick-off. However, the same welcome was not extended to West Ham’s on-loan Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart. However, the Mexican striker was completely shut out of the game. Matic was outstanding in midfield, as he laid the foundation for many of United's attacks. Lukaku threatened early with a burst down the left and Henrikh Mkhitaryan had a shot blocked and fired over. Hart succeeded in blocking a Juan Mata effort. Mata then slipped the ball past Hart after being set up by Pogba and United took the lead after 33 minutes. Pedro Obiang gifted the ball to Matic and Marcus Rashford raced clear to slide in Lukaku. The Belgian finished by bouncing his shot off a post. West Ham’s Edimilson Fernandes came close to scoring on United goalie David de Gea. Early in the second half, Mkhitaryan sent a free kick into the box and Lukaku was gifted the space to power a header past Joe Hart. West Ham debutant Marko Arnautovic looped a header onto the bar. Lukaku was next denied a hat trick by a brilliant block from Pablo Zabaleta. Rashford then hit the post from distance and Daley Blind’s shot bounced over. United’s third goal came as Mkhitaryan teed up Martial with three minutes left in the game, and Pogba then added a fourth with a curling shot in the last minute.
Romelu Lukaku was delighted after netting a brace against West Ham. Lukaku says he has already developed a "special" relationship with his teenage Manchester United teammate Marcus Rashford, and says they are already on the same wavelength. Lukaku scored twice on his Premier League debut in th 4-0 win against West Ham following a £75 million move from Everton this summer. "With me and Marcus, there's something special,” said Lukaku. “Hopefully we can produce even more than we did today. We clicked from the first day that I arrived, and I knew that he would help me settle in at the club. I knew Jesse Lingard from before, and Paul, they're probably my closest friends in the dressing room, but I get on with everybody in the team." Romelu Lukaku scored two goals against West Ham on his home debut for Manchester United and would have capped his home debut with a hat trick but for Pablo Zabaleta's block in the second half. Lukaku could have been the first Manchester United player to score a hat trick on the opening day of the season since Lou Macari in a 4-1 win at Birmingham in 1977. "I wish it was three goals and a hat trick to be fair I was thinking about it. I'm a striker so I'm always thinking about scoring goals,” said Lukaku. "Strikers are there to score goals and, if you stick to your job, you're going to do well. But, at the end, of the day I want to win and the team wants to win. So I'm really happy that everybody performed well and that we've set a high standard." Mourinho appears to be assembling a side with no obvious weaknesses and Matic’s contribution for the first goal was an example of why he had been added to the squad. Matic played with great control and it was his interception, cutting out Pedro Obiang’s pass, that sent Rashford up on the counter-attacking move that led to Lukaku scoring from 12 yards. West Ham’s frontline of Hernández, Marko Arnautovic, and André Ayew were outplayed according to manager Slaven Bilic. “They were better than us in every department,” Bilic reflected. “We are very low.” Martial stroked in the third goal and Pogba added the final blow to West Ham fans. “The fans have reason to be optimistic,” Mourinho said.
